Mala beads are traditional strings of 108 beads used for meditation, prayer (japa), yoga, and mindfulness practices in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Each bead represents one mantra repetition. They are also worn as spiritual jewelry.

The number 108 is considered sacred in both Hinduism and Buddhism. It represents the universe, the 108 earthly desires in Buddhism, or the 108 names of deities. A full mala of 108 beads allows you to repeat a mantra 108 times in one sitting.

Hold the mala in your right hand, draping it over your middle finger. Start at the bead next to the guru bead and use your thumb to move through each bead, reciting your mantra once per bead. When you reach the guru bead, pause and reflect, then reverse direction. This practice is called japa meditation.
